Facebook is reportedly willing to put their step into consumer hardware business. With this new business thought, they will be launching a new video chat device – ‘Portal’. The company is planning to launch ‘Portal’ during May this year.
According to Cheddar’s report, Facebook will be announcing the device during their annual developer conference. The device is expected to ship during the second half of 2018. The report further added that Facebook wants to pitch their upcoming device as ‘a way for families and friends to stay connected through video chatting and other social features.’
Report further added that Facebook is planning to launch the device with the price tag of $499, but they might bring it down in order to spur consumer adoption. Facebook will sell their device through pop up stores and online, people who were familiar with this news told the publication. Adding further, the smart video device will come with a wide angle camera which will have the capability to recognise an individual’s face and associate them with their Facebook accounts. Also, the device can be controlled with voice and users will be able to view third party apps like Netflix.
This is not the first time that a smart video chat device information has been leaked. Previously, as per the report by Bloomberg, the video chat device will feature a laptop sized touch screen and it’s official announcement can be made at the F8 developer conference, which is scheduled to take place in 2018. The touchscreen could have a measurement between 13 and 15 inches diagonally. The report further added that “the device is in the prototype phase but it has already been tested at people’s homes.” For making the device a reality, Facebook’s Building 8 lab is responsible.
The device will be running on the Android version. Also, Facebook has dropped the idea of building its own operating system for the same. Facebook is also planning to introduce a 360 degree camera attachment feature however, the same might not be able to complete before the official launch.
