Chinese tech giant Xiaomi has announced the latest version of its proprietary UI, MIUI 12.5 for the Xiaomi and Redmi smartphones. Just like the previous versions (like MIUI 11.5, 10.5) the Android 11-based MIUI 12.5 operating system (OS) brings new features, beautiful changes, improvements and few changes to privacy, and a new MIUI+ to connect to computers.
Xiaomi claims that MIUI 12.5 is made to consume up to 32% less memory in system operations and provide a 17 % lessening in power consumption. The new skin also optimizes memory usage in core scenarios by as much as 20 %. Besides, it is touted to optimize system apps and also deliver finer graphics rendering over MIUI 12.
MIUI 12.5 brings on the presence of animated Super Wallpapers, with the addition of Snow Mountain and Geometry. These come along with the existing Super-Earth, Super Mars, and Super Saturn wallpapers that are available with MIUI 12. The brand also claims that Super Wallpapers consume 40% less power on MIUI 12.5.
The latest MIUI upgrade brings extra nature-inspired sound effects, with special tracks from the Amazon, African jungles, and the Arctic ice dessert. It also brings improved haptics and notification sound effects to provide a new feel. One will also notice the stereo system sounds on compatible devices. In addition, MIUI 12.5 brings a new motion effect architecture to give a better animation experience. It also brings an intensified immersive touch with the incorporation of an all-new tangible library.
On the interface front, there is an introduction of floating windows that allows you to quickly respond to a message or look at maps and you don’t have to leave your active screen. The MIUI upgrade also proposes a new ‘Ripples’ animation for downloading apps and a ‘Burst’ animation for removing apps on the home screen. The MIUI 12.5 also shows a vertical layout for the ‘Recents’ screen.
In terms of updated privacy, MIUI 12.5 has the ability to prompt you with a pop-up when an app tries to access your clipboard data. You can either allow access or refuse. An option to automatically refuse access after a timeout is also in place. The MIUI 12.5 upgrade also gives an option to share an approximate location rather than an exact location with certain apps.
MIUI 12.5 also supports sandboxing to separate photo albums and private information from third parties. The new update also highlights webpage behavior records to provide you details about the websites that could loot your data. And similar to iOS 14, the Mi App Store on MIUI 12.5 also gives privacy details for each listed app.
Xiaomi has also added updated Notes and Mi Browser to MIUI 12.5. There are also updates particularly for Xiaomi Health services and Mi Cloud to offer a better experience. Furthermore, Xiaomi does not offer bloatware on MIUI 12.5, with lesser pre-installed apps over other custom ROMs.
MIUI 12.5 also comprises MIUI+ that works like Microsoft’s Your Phone app and lets you integrate your Xiaomi phone with a Windows PC. Once combined, it allows you to view text messages, notifications, and photos from your phone right on your computer. It lets you access your phone’s clipboard data and some apps on your computer screen as well.
At first, MIUI+ is available in beta and is restricted to Mi 10 Extreme Commemorative Edition, Mi 10, Mi 10 Pro, Mi 9, Mi 9 Pro 5G, Redmi K30 Ultra, Redmi K20 Pro, and Redmi K30 Pro. The phone needs to run MIUI 12.5 to enable incorporation. Xiaomi recommends Mi Notebook Pro 15 Enhanced Edition, Pro 15.6-inch 2020 model, RedmiBook 16, RedmiBook 14 II, Redmi G gaming notebook, and RedmiBook Air 13 as the computers that can best experience this UI. The brand said that because of driver and hardware limitations, it wouldn’t promise the same experience on other notebooks.
