Ola is reportedly getting prepared to make a debut in the electric scooter market in January 2021. According to a current PTI report citing sources aware of the matter, the ride-hailing giant will manufacture the automobiles at a facility within the Netherlands and will then promote those in India and Europe. The sources said Ola Electric, the EV wing of the ride-hailing company, plans to roll out the electric scooter simultaneously across India and several European markets by January 2021.
The e-scooter is likely to be priced competitively against the petrol scooters currently running on the roads, as the company is looking at tapping into a majority of the 20 million units-two wheeler market in India, they added.
Although it is pretty early to speculate the sales figures, sources claim that Ola is estimating the sales of at least 1 million electric scooters in the first year. However, everyone will have to wait to see if Ola manages to meet this target or not.
Initial inventory of the vehicle will come from the Netherlands but the company is exploring ways to set up a manufacturing facility in India itself. The facility in case set up, may have an annual capacity of 2 million units, making it India’s largest electric scooter manufacturing plant.
