Reliance Jio on Thursday announced that it would once again make off-net domestic voice calling facility absolutely free on its network from January 1, 2021. Jio will again start its previous culture over a year after it charged its subscribers 6 paise per minute to make voice calls to other mobile networks. The latest decision came as a result of the ‘Bill and Keep’ regime that the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) executed in the country from January 1 that will stop interconnect usage charges (IUC) for all domestic voice calls.
“On-net domestic voice calls have always been free on the Jio network,” the company said in a statement.
“In September 2019, when TRAI extended the timeline for implementation of the Bill & Keep regime beyond 1st January 2020, Jio was left with no option but to start charging its customers for off-net voice calls, at a rate exactly equivalent to the applicable IUC charge. While doing so, Jio had assured its users that this charge would continue only till the time TRAI abolished IUC charges. Today, Jio has delivered on that promise and made off-net voice calls free again,” Jio added.
