Samsung Galaxy S20 and Galaxy Note 20 series users can now install an exclusive app that will improve the performance of a set of games on their phones through standalone GPU driver updates. The Samsung GameDriver app is available for both Exynos and Qualcomm Snapdragon variants of the Galaxy S20 and Galaxy Note 20 models. As of now, Samsung has chosen its flagship models only, for the new experience, but it does have plans to expand the app to additional devices in the future.
To bring the GameDriver app, Samsung has tied up with Google and GPU vendors including ARM and Qualcomm. “Game Driver provides a new way of updating GPU drivers by store and this delivers more stable and better-performing GPU driving for the target games,” the South Korean company said in a post on the Samsung Developers website.
Popular gaming-specific devices like Asus ROG Phone 3 and Razer Phone 2 have dedicated hardware changes including an exclusive heat-dissipating system and special controls for action games. Samsung also has competitive devices including the Galaxy S20 (Rs. 48,990) and Galaxy Note 20 (Rs. 77,999) models that have the capability to be the first choice for gamers.
But since mobile gaming is becoming more graphic-intensive, Samsung’s new GameDriver app allows the company to offer advancements— even without launching full software updates. Companies like Nvidia offer regular graphics processor updates to bring advancements and optimizations that are not available through general software updates.
Samsung is not the only manufacturer to bring GPU driver updates to smartphones. Earlier in March, Qualcomm announced support for updateable GPU drivers on its Snapdragon SoCs using the Snapdragon Elite Gaming feature. It debuted on the Pixel 4 and the Pixel 4 XL through a collaboration with certain game studios. Oppo and Xiaomi have also introduced a similar experience on their flagships recently.
So if you have a Samsung Galaxy S20 or Galaxy Note 20 phone, you can now download the Exynos or Qualcomm version of the GameDriver app directly from the Google Play store. It supports gaming titles including Fortnite, Black Desert, and Call of Duty: Mobile. The list of games may get updated in the upcoming days. Samsung shared that it has future plans to make the app available to more devices.
