Twitter has announced its most tweeted categories and hashtags of the year in India. The famous Indian cricketer Virat Kohli’s tweet announcing pregnancy of Anushka Sharma’s was the most liked tweet of the year whereas Tamil actor Vijay’s selfie with his fans was the most retweeted tweet in India. #COVID19 was tweeted most among current affairs topic whereas the most tweeted tweet about people’s movement was #StudentLivesMatter. The laughing emoji was the most used emoji on Twitter in 2020 and #DilBechara was the most tweeted movie hashtag in 2020. About sports events, IPL 2020 was the most tweeted and Mirzapur 2 was the most tweeted web series.
As per Twitter, there was an equivalent of more than 7000 tweets per minute regarding TV and movies this year globally. Conversations about #COVID19, tributes given to #SushantSinghRajput and tweets about #Hathras made it to the most tweeted hashtags in current affairs. #IPL2020 and #DilBechara were the top sports and top movie hashtags whereas #Binod became the most tweeted meme of 2020. Adding further Twitter said that #Ramayan, #Mahabharat and #Pokiri made a comeback as a nostalgic conversations this year while people’s interests such as #Photography, #Yoga and #Poetry was discussed widely on the platform. The most tweeted reality show this year was Big Boss.
Twitter also said that this year also brought a sense of gratitude for our frontline workers. Tweets expressing feelings of being grateful or thankful increased by 20 percent globally, particularly recognition of doctors (+135 percent) and teachers (+30 percent). Twitter said that it has announced these honours on basis of the data identified from January 1 to November 15.
Vijay, Tamil actor’s selfie was the “most retweeted tweet of 2020”. He tweeted his selfie with his fans in Neyveli back in February and had more than 149000 retweets.
If we talk about politics, the most retweeted tweet was Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s tweet wherein he had asked the citizens of India to “light lamps of hope and good health” to be grateful to the COVID-19 frontline workers. PM Modi had also asked people to do this as a symbolic gesture of solidarity towards each other.
On the other hand, Indian cricketer MS Dhoni’s thanks giving tweet to PM Modi also received massive response from the fans for sending him a letter that appreciated his excellency, achievements and contribution to the Indian cricket. It was the ‘most liked tweet in 2020 in sports’.
Ratan Tata, Chairman of Tata Trusts announced a commitment of Rs. 500 crores on behalf of the company to protect and empower communities hampered by the pandemic via Twitter and was the “most retweeted in the business category” and has over 58000 retweets.

In his tweet, he had requested the people that those who had come in contact with him should get tested, spreading awareness about the virus. Twitter has said that those quote-tweeting his tweet wished him a speedy recovery and also encouraged people to stay safe, stay at home, wash hands and wear masks.
The most tweeted meme of the year 2020 in India was #Binod and a mention of “Binod” in a video by Slayy Point set off this meme. After this creators, brands and even the police jumped in on the conversation, changing their profile names and tweeting videos and pictures.
